Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS
UNAIDS is a joint programme run by six UN agencies - UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UNDCP, UNESCO, WHO - and the World Bank.
In Latvia the work of UNAIDS is coordinated through a UNAIDS Theme Group which brings together representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as the international community.
The main and global trend of UNAIDS is to manage, strengthen and support strategic activities for prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic in order to:
- limit the spread of HIV;
- provide care and support to HIV infected persons;
- decrease the HIV risk factors that influence both individuals and general public;
- decrease the social and economic impact of the epidemic on society.
UNAIDS began its activities in Latvia in 1996.
